Europe
In Europe, only the aristocracy use cosmetics, with Italy and France emerging as the main centers of cosmetics manufacturing. Arsenic is sometimes used in face powder instead of lead.
The modern notion of complex scent-making evolves in France. Early fragrances are amalgams of naturally occurring ingredients. Later, chemical processes for combining and testing scents supersede their arduous and labor-intensive predecessors.
During the European middle ages, pale skin was a sign of wealth. Sixth century women sought drastic measures to achieve that look by bleeding themselves.
In England in the Middle Ages, it was popular for women to dye their hair red or to wear egg whites on their face to whiten it. Around 1500 AD Blonde hair became more popular due to its angelic appearance. For their cheeks, the British applied red ochre to make them red. In this period, people learned to use pencils made of plasters mixed with colour or ground alabasters to draw a circumference line around the lips. They still used Blue paint to outline their veins. The concept of “A sign of beauty” was still concerned.
During the Italian Renaissance, lead pain was used to lighten the face, which was very damaging to the wearer.
